Why are you credited as "KittyGame" in most of your games?
That was a username I used online when I was younger.
I've continued to use this username well into my career
of game development as a sort of tribute to my younger self.
I would often dream ideas of wonderful games I would want to
make, but I did not have the skills or discipline to make them.
By carrying this old username as an adult, now, it's sort of
a way to carry out my childhood wishes. If you hadn't deduced
it already, "KG" is an abbreviation for "KittyGame". It's also
why most of my webpages have a drawing of a cat on them.
How or why did you become a video game designer?
Making games always interested me because it was so different
than any other entertainment medium. You aren't making something
that can only viewed from one viewpoint like a movie, album, or a book;
you're making something that can be broken apart, disected, and approached
many different ways. I started making games because of this.
Are you religious?
No, but I may be at one point in life.
What are you most scared of?
Being robbed.
What is the ultimate fast food?
Panera Bread.
Do you have a reoccuring dream?
No, but subways always show up in my dreams to the point
where it is starting to become a problem.
If you hadn't been a game designer, what would you have been?
A teacher.
Are you a person who loves eating?
Yes, and cooking as well.
What is the thing you want the most in the world right now?
End to world hunger.
What was the first game you ever played?
Wii Sports, or Mario Kart Wii. I don't remember which one.
What do you hate most about computers?
When things start to break on the hardware side of things.
I struggle when it comes to that aspect of development.
What do you like best about computers?
The ability to articulate and create any digital thing
you can think of.
What is your favorite game?
Shenmue I & II.
Is there any game designer today you got your eye on?
Tamano. They also go by dono. I'm hoping they make a non-fangame game soon.
Who is your favorite manga artist?
Masaaki Yuasa of Kaiba fame.
Do you feel a special pride in any games that you have created?
Usually. It's very strange to step back and think: "Wow, I made this?"
What qualities are necessary to be a good game designer?
Patience is the biggest one. If you aren't ready to remake
a section of your game numerous times, you will never make it
as a designer.
I also think that designing games solely based on what is popular
is a bad practice as well. You should make games for
yourself and yourself only.
Do you play games outside of work?
Yes.
How does one become a game designer?
Make a small project, then make a slightly bigger
project, then make a bigger one, etc...
Is there money in being a game designer?
I wouldn't know.
Is there a future to the role of game designer?
I hope so!
